Bernie Sanders holds strong lead, according to polls

WASHINGTON – Sen. Bernie Sanders holds a strong lead among 2020 Wisconsin Democratic presidential primary voters, according to a poll released Monday.

Emerson Polling found that 39 percent of the respondents said they support Sanders (I-Vt.). Former Vice President Joe Biden, who has not yet entered the race but has strongly hinted that he will do so, came in second with 24 percent.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass) came in third with 14 percent. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (Tex.) came in fourth with 6 percent. Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.) came in fifth with 5 percent. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) came in sixth with 4 percent. Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.) came in seventh with 2 percent. The other seven candidates polled at 1 percent or below.

The survey included 324 registered voters and was carried out Mar. 15-17. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points.

Sanders, 77, is a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist. During the last presidential election cycle, he mounted a formidable primary challenge against the eventual-Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. Sanders defeated Clinton in Wisconsin and 22 other states.

Since that time many of the issues Sanders championed, such as “Medicare for All,” have been embraced by many mainstream Democrats, including several of his fellow 2020 contenders.

National polls show Sanders leading among the declared candidates. Biden leads when prospective candidates are included.
