cryolipolysis targets fat cells that form cellulite

A new treatment is popping up in salons and spas across the country that aims to eliminate — or drastically reduce – cellulite. Known as cryolipolysis, the treatment targets the fat cells that cause those characteristic dimples, freezing them and destroying them in the process.

About 93% of women have cellulite, and while common, most women are embarrassed by it. Cryolipolysis provides women with another option for reducing the appearance of cellulite on the body.

Cellulite forms when body fat deep underneath the skin is pushed up against the connective tissues that surround it. Pressure forces that fat against the top layers of the skin, creating dimples in the skin.

Weight gain can make cellulite more prominent, but even thin people have it. Doctors say having some cellulite is considered normal from a medical standpoint.

Genetics is believed to be the main cause of cellulite. If your mother or grandmother had it, there’s a good chance that you will, too. Diet and lifestyle also plays a role. Eating healthy and exercising can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, but even thin, fit people can have it.

That’s where treatments like cryolipolysis may be able to help.

“We utilise the proven technology of cryolipolysis to cool fat cells in the targeted areas to temperatures that trigger their natural death,” Dore Aesthetics Singapore explains. “As fat cells crystallize faster than normal cells, there is no damage to your nerves and other tissues.”

In the following weeks after the treatment, the fat cells shrink and begin to die. The body naturally metabolizes dead fat cells, removing them from the body.

Removal of these fat cells reduces the pressure pushing against the top layer of the skin, which is what creates the “cottage cheese” look.

Dore says results can be seen in as little as three weeks after treatment, but the body will continue flushing out fat cells for up to six months. The results are supposed to be long-lasting, as once the body metabolizes the fat cells, they are gone for good.

Along with cryolipolysis, women also have the option of using laser therapy or acoustic wave therapy to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Cellulaze is one of the most popular laser treatments for cellulite. With this treatment, a tiny laser is inserted beneath the skin. When the laser is fired, it breaks up the bands beneath the skin that cause cellulite to form. This treatment can thicken skin, which can further help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Skin typically becomes thinner in areas where cellulite forms.

Many patients see results that last a year or more with this laser treatment.

Acoustic wave therapy has also helped many women reduce the appearance of cellulite, although several treatments are required to see results.

Along with these treatment options, doctors say exercise and stretching can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Building muscle in these key areas provides more support, which helps reduce the dimple effect. Maintaining a healthy weight will further help reduce cellulite, as weight gain can make it more prominent.
