Commerce, CA – Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40) was appointed today by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi as one of four House Democrats on the newly created Joint Select Committee on Budget and Appropriations Process Reform.  The committee will provide recommendations and legislative language to significantly improve the budget and appropriations process.  As the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, with nearly 20 years of experience as a House Appropriator, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard will bring a career of institutional knowledge to her role on the committee.  And as the first Mexican-American congresswoman, the first Latina to serve on the House Appropriations Committee, and the first Latina to serve as a chair or ranking member on a House Appropriations Subcommittee, she will seek to create a budget and appropriations process that better represents the perspectives of a diverse America.

Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard

“I am honored to accept Leader Pelosi’s appointment to this important committee,” said Congresswoman Roybal-Allard.  “If we want America to remain a strong and powerful nation, if we want to fulfill our promises to the American people, then it is critical for us to improve the budget and appropriations process.  Congress cannot govern by passing one continuing resolution after another, and leaving the federal government to run on autopilot.  We cannot keep kicking the can down the road on big decisions and obligations that affect us all, but that is what the current budget and appropriations process has led to.  We need sensible, effective reforms that will help Congress improve this important process, while also maintaining the integrity of the underlying budget and appropriations processes.  I look forward to helping to bring those reforms to fruition.”

“A budget is a statement of values, and it is vital that we update and improve our budgetary process so that we can honor our responsibility to America’s children, seniors and working families,” said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  “As a respected appropriator, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard brings exceptional experience and expertise to this mission.  We look forward to her leadership on this vital committee.”

The committee’s other House Democratic appointees are Congresswoman Nita Lowey (NY-17), the Joint Select Committee’s Democratic Co-Chair and the Appropriations Committee Ranking Member; Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03), the Budget Committee Ranking Member; and Congressman Derek Kilmer (WA-06), the Appropriations Committee Vice Ranking Member.
