Super Bowl LIX Was Very Entertaining
This Super Bowl LIX (59) looked like it was going to be a bit of a yawner. What with the Kansas City Chiefs going for a very rare “three-peat” — a term that apparently is owned by former basketball head coach Pat Riley from when he coached the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s — many of us, including me, were tired of seeing the Chiefs standing on the post-game podium collecting trophies and confetti.
Winning three straight championships is rare in all of professional sports — and the college game too — although my Green Bay Packers did it twice: from 1929-31 under coach Curley Lambeau and then again from 1965-67, under sainted Vince Lombardi, the man whose name is now on the NFL championship trophy, the Super Bowl trophies.
True, it has never been done in the Super Bowl era, but the Packers have twice won three in a row, the second time included the first two Super Bowls. I watched those awesome Green Bay Packers as a kid, in the basement with Dad cheering on the Pack. Bart Starr and Ray Nitschke were my heroes and I met both — at our church’s annual Sports Night when athletes were invited to join the Holy Name Society for a dinner with the congregation’s men and their sons. At one of them Nitschke lifted me up over his head, freaking the shit out of my nine-year-old brain, but it is a very fond memory for me.
Back to February 9, 2025 and the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, LA. I thought it would be another repeat of Patrick Mahomes being named Super Bowl MVP and all due glory that would go with winning a third straight title, and then some.

The most interesting thing about this season’s championship game was that the convicted felon-in-chief was going to be in attendance cheering on the Chiefs. Brittany Mahomes, erstwhile wife of the Chiefs QB, is a huge supporter and friend of the convicted felon so he’s a Chiefs fan too.
Don’t get me wrong Mahomes and the Chiefs deserve all the accolades they get. They are the latest winning dynasty in the NFL, having made the playoffs 12 times since 2010 and won the big game four times in that stretch.
Anyway, ho-hum, yawn, the Chiefs were the favorites and quite frankly, no one but the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans thought the Eagles could win this game. So, not wanting to see Kansas City do it again — and definitely not wanting to see the convicted felon-in-chief on TV again, I decided to go to a local dog park to let Chica and Jackson run around without leashes and also to fly my drone. Unfortunately the drone wouldn’t synch up with my iPhone’s wifi so I was unable to get any videos or photos.

When I did get home and turn on the game, the second quarter had started and, surprise, surprise, Cooper DeJean of the Eagles defense had intercepted a Mahomes pass for a pick-6 to bring the score to 17-0. Philly would end up going into halftime with a 24-0 lead — this was the first time Kansas City had ever suffered such a large deficit in the first half of a game. Still, Mahomes and his offense were known for their second half come backs so it was too early to assume the Eagles had this one in the bag.
With my hot wings from a local wings establishment on a table in front of me, I sat in front of my big screen to watch what I thought would be the latest Kansas City Chiefs come back; I mean, the Kansas City three-peat was so expected it was all any sports news commentators were talking about ever since the Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in the AFC title game two weeks ago.
Frankly, I was surprised Buffalo lost that game, but a professional sports franchise doesn’t become a great dynasty on luck and consistent mediocrity. Teams like the Kansas City Chiefs make their own luck due to unrelenting preparation and a dedication to the principle of never, ever, giving up.
That was on display starting the third quarter. They would go on to score 22 points, but Mahomes was dogged all night by the Philly defense, getting sacked six times and throwing two interceptions. QB Jalen Hurts is the game MVP, but many people thought Eagles linebacker Josh Sweat was the MVP for disrupting the Chiefs offense all night, including 2.5 sacks and six tackles … but Hurts had a great game —the best of his career — on Sunday.
Hurts had more rushing yards than RB Saquon Barkley: 72 to 57, plus one touchdown, a brotherly shove as the Philadelphia fans call a tush push. But, the Eagles would not have gotten to Super Bowl LIX without Barkley. He broke 2,000 yards rushing in the 2024 season with 13 touchdowns.
The Eagles defense was cooking on all burners Sunday, yet the Chiefs offense was able to score 22 points in the second half. That’s how good Kansas City is: they never, ever give up. It just wasn’t good enough to win the game.
It’s nice to see Barkley and Hurts get titles and rings. Both proved they are elite players at their respective positions. People who doubt that are blind, or hard-hearted or just plain mean. The fans in Philly got to see their team win another Super Bowl. Best of all, I can’t remember ever seeing the felon-in-chief on screen.
The Halftime Show with Kendrick Lamar was great due to his swipes at the felon and his policies. Samuel L. Jackson was the show’s narrator so he helped Lamar deliver those messages. Progressives had a reason to watch the Super Bowl once again.
I will bet the Chiefs make it to Super Bowl LX next season. Do they win it? Who knows? The NFC has some great contenders, including the Green Bay Packers. The AFC has some great contenders as well, like Buffalo and Cincinnati. I just don’t see any of them getting past Kansas City. The Chiefs are one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history, on par with the Vince Lombardi Packers and the Bill Belichick New England Patriots.
Funny side story: the sports crowd made too big a deal over Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend Jordan Hudson, although one guy noted the old coach’s boobs were bigger than hers. Click here to see a photo of them.
Another of the great moments was the reboot of the diner scene from When Harry Met Sally. Men Ryan and Billy Crystal still got it and Sydney Sweeney completes the commercial. Well done. The so called “creatives” said several other ads were better than the Hellmann’s mayonnaise commercial and their favorite, the Uber Eats conspiracy with all the stars, led by Matthew McConaughey, is very good as well.
Watching Super Bowl LIX was not time wasted, like I originally thought it would be. It was very entertaining.

Tim Forkes started as a writer on a small alternative newspaper in Milwaukee called the Crazy Shepherd. Writing about entertainment, he had the opportunity to speak with many people in show business, from the very famous to the people struggling to find an audience. In 1992 Tim moved to San Diego, CA and pursued other interests, but remained a freelance writer. Upon arrival in Southern California he was struck by how the elected government officials and business were so intertwined, far more so than he had witnessed in Wisconsin. His interest in entertainment began to wane and the business of politics took its place. He had always been interested in politics, his mother had been a Democratic Party official in Milwaukee, WI, so he sat down to dinner with many of Wisconsin’s greatest political names of the 20th Century: William Proxmire and Clem Zablocki chief among them. As a Marine Corps veteran, Tim has a great interest in veteran affairs, primarily as they relate to the men and women serving and their families. As far as Tim is concerned, the military-industrial complex has enough support. How the men and women who serve are treated is reprehensible, while in the military and especially once they become veterans. Tim would like to help change that.
