Kamala Harris Makes Stunning Case For Presidency
History has been made.
Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, is officially the Democratic presidential nominee for 2024 following her acceptance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Vice President Harris has now become the first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to accept a major party’s presidential nomination.
After hearing Governor Roy Cooper blow the roof off of the building on Day 4 of the 2024 Democratic National Convention with his electrifying speech he made a fan out of me. I was moved by his ability to humanize Vice President Kamala Harris from their days working together representing their respective states as the attorney general.
The North Carolina governor who jokingly stated he was “the last guy standing between you and the moment we’re all waiting for,” evoked emotion as he called on his state and others to stand with him to support “my friend, Kamala” during an electrifying roll call that got the crowd roaring.
The governor posed the question, “Are we gonna’ stand up and fight for Kamala like she’ll stand up and fight for us?” Then he said, “If you’re ready my home state of North Carolina, stand up.” Cooper went on to call out various other states and the crowd lit up like a Fourth of July fireworks celebration.
“Stand up America,” Cooper said. Then he challenged the audience and the millions watching around the U.S. and around the world, “Are we gonna’ stand up?” “Are we gonna’ fight?” “Are we gonna’ vote?” “Are we gonna’ win?” he asked. “You bet we are,” he shouted.
I thought his speech was top-notch. “Stand up was the theme he wanted to get across and he had everybody up on their feet.” Mission accomplished.
A festive mood filled the United Center before Harris appeared onstage.
Prior to that, I had believed that the vice president’s sister Maya Harris who spoke immediately prior to the governor should have introduced her “big sister.” Ultimately, the campaign strategized it perfectly because the younger Harris made her point and the governor made an even bigger one.
Then came the huge moment of the night that potential voters across America had tuned in to see — Kamala Harris take the stage. As I sat and watched the historic introduction with my daughter while my mother joined us from Mississippi on speaker phone — us all watching and experiencing it together — three generations of Black girls — all I could think about was what a moment.
After the video introduction, I burst into tears unexpectedly. I did not know that the moment would have so much gravity that I literally could not stop crying. I was balling profusely and as I continued to watch what I saw were tears flowing from virtually every woman they showed on the screen and some men were also shedding tears. After seeing people from all races and ages crying and the staggering excitement from others, I believed in that moment that something right had happened.
In the crowd, I was proud to see that so many across the aisles have joined forces to celebrate the United States’ first Black woman presidential nominee.
I was especially pleased to see California leaders who made the trip to Chicago to support the vice president. In true democratic spirit, Governor Gavin Newsom, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler, among many others, embraced the moment with joy and enthusiasm as well as Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi who reinvigorated the DNC, according to Newsweek.
From the offset of the convention, a theme of joy began on Monday night as we saw Mayor Karen Bass ecstatically take to the stage to endorse “her friend” and later we saw Congressman Ted Lieu, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and so many other California political leaders present to support the former California attorney general turned California senator turned United States vice president.
Rising to the occasion, the vice president came across as very patriotic and stood her ground.
“In the enduring struggle between democracy and tyranny, I know where I stand. And I know where the United States belongs,” she said.
Harris called out the GOP nominee stating, “In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man,” she said. “But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious.”
“We are not going back,” Harris said.
Former President Trump appeared to be watching Harris’ speech and simultaneously posted arguments to his Truth Social network in real-time.
Immediately after Harris’ speech, Trump called Fox News and shared even more of what he believed about the Biden-Harris administration leadership failures.
“All of this talk about what she is going to do. She could have done it three years ago,” the former president stated.
Trump told Fox News that “I’m having success. I’m doing great with the Hispanic voters. I’m doing great with Black men. I’m doing great with women because women want safety.”
The former president falsely claimed that “We’re doing very well in the polls, we’re leading in most of the polls,” he said. “And in the swing states, we’re leading in almost every one of them,” which TIME reported was not the case.
Harris’ monumental leap to worldwide superstardom over the past eight weeks has been a welcoming shift, especially for Gen Z voters and Baby Boomers.
“We must be worthy of this moment,” Harris said during her historic acceptance speech.
Unless you have been living under a rock you know that we are living in a historic moment with a Black woman heading up the ticket.
Harris, who chose “Pioneer” as her Secret Service code name, follows in pioneering Black politician Shirley Chisholm’s footsteps. In 1972 Chisholm, the first-ever Black woman elected to Congress, made history again becoming the first Black woman of a major party to run for a presidential nomination.
The excitement that a woman could become president has shifted the entire 2024 election in an extraordinary way.
Both parties have jubilant hopes for this November. If Trump is elected he will be inaugurated as a second-term president. If Harris wins she would be the first female U.S. president.
Considering the historic switch in the presidential ticket, it remains to be seen if former First Lady Melanie Trump will have a more visible role for the remainder of the election. However, the Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff has been nonstop out front on the campaign trail and more often than not visibly moved as he relishes in seeing his wife make history. Of course, Emhoff would advance to the country’s inaugural First Gentleman if the Democrats prevail at the polls in 74 days.
In recent memory, Americans were grieving with Trump amid an attempted assassination on his life. Following his triumph of surviving the scary ordeal, Trump’s team emphasized him as a “fighter” and his poll numbers skyrocketed and made many believe that the race was one sided and done.
That narrative all changed when President Joe Biden stepped down in his quest for reelection and passed the torch to Vice President Harris. With the help of his endorsement, Harris has been able to rapidly unify the Democratic Party.
During the vice president’s convention speech, I believe she was very poised and came across as a Commander-in-Chief. She clearly had democracy and unifying the country top of mind when she stated, “Our nation with this election has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past.”
The vice president further stated, “a chance to chart a new way forward, not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.”
Members of the Republican party and Hollywood elite have questioned Trump’s decision in selecting vice presidential running mate Senator J.D. Vance, doubting that he was the correct choice. After all, it was Vance who stated long before that he was ”never a Trump guy.”
Comparatively, other Hollywood heavyweights and bipartisan leaders are cheering for Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota for being the right pick, even over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro who GOP leaders reportedly believed would do the most to help the vice president.
Harris has been able to gain Republican endorsements as well as support from Hollywood power brokers behind her candidacy, catapulting her to worldwide superstardom.
The latest national Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll shows a Harris lead over Republican Donald Trump in a 49% to 45% among registered voters.
Former first lady Michelle Obama said it best. “Yes, Kamala and Tim are doing great now,” Mrs. Obama said. “We’re loving it. They are packing arenas across the country. Folks are energized. We are feeling good. But remember, there are still so many people who are desperate for a different outcome.”
The sitting vice president is the candidate of change.
And though the U.S. campaign has now garnered massive global attention, the American voters will ultimately decide.
If you have not registered to vote, you can do so here.
