Rain in Southern California today

Listen to this article

It has been raining this morning and will continue on and off throughout the day.

We will be getting thunderstorms from Santa Barbara south into San Diego County, with the latter getting soaked well into the evening. Most of Los Angeles and Orange County should see the rain stop in the middle of the afternoon/evening rush hour, but in San Diego it will go on into the evening.

We should expect high winds throughout the area as well for the next two days.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning that will be in effect until noon Tuesday. low-lying beach areas should expect some flooding due to high surf, elevated tides and gusty west winds.

The highest surf will be on west-facing beaches.

From the National Weather Service:

* COASTAL FLOODING … THE COMBINATION OF VERY LARGE SURF … GUSTY WEST WINDS … AND ELEVATED HIGH TIDES WILL LIKELY BRING MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING OF LOW LYING AREAS TODAY NEAR TIMES OF HIGH TIDE. WHILE WINDS WILL BE WEAKER ON TUESDAY MORNING … THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE A THREAT OF COASTAL FLOODING DUE TO THE VERY LARGE SURF AND ELEVATED TIDES. POTENTIAL COASTAL FLOODING RISKS INCLUDE BEACH PARKING LOTS AND CAMPGROUNDS AS WELL AS NORMALLY DRY HARBOR WALKWAYS AND NEARBY ROADS.

* IMPACTS … THERE IS AN INCREASED RISK FOR OCEAN DROWNING DUE TO THE VERY LARGE SURF AND STRONG RIP CURRENTS. SNEAKER WAVES CAN SUDDENLY WASH PEOPLE OFF OF BEACHES AND ROCK JETTIES. THE EXTENDED PERIOD OF HIGH SURF WILL ALSO BRING THE RISK OF SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION. DURING THE PEAK OF THIS SURF EVENT THERE WILL ALSO BE A THREAT OF DAMAGE TO COASTAL STRUCTURES SUCH AS PIERS.

* LOCATIONS … HIGHEST SURF ON WEST FACING BEACHES … ESPECIALLY NEAR VENTURA HARBOR AND MANHATTAN BEACH.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS …

A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY MEANS THAT MINOR AND SHALLOW FLOODING IS EXPECTED. AVOID LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS … ESPECIALLY DURING HIGH TIDES. THIS IS THE TIME TO SECURE SANDBAGS FOR POTENTIAL COASTAL FLOOD PROTECTION NEAR STRUCTURES.

A HIGH SURF WARNING MEANS THAT DAMAGING SURF AND VERY STRONG RIP CURRENTS WILL MAKE SWIMMING VERY DANGEROUS. INEXPERIENCED SURFERS AND SWIMMERS SHOULD STAY OUT OF THE WATER AND EVERYONE SHOULD AVOID BEING ON ROCKS AND JETTIES.

REMEMBER… IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT … SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE UNTIL YOU ARE FREE OF THE POWERFUL CURRENT. ALWAYS SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD.
