Tiger Woods’ DUI video released by Jupiter police
WASHINGTON – Police in Florida released a video Wednesday of Tiger Woods performing roadside sobriety tests just before his DUI arrest early Monday as well as photos showing “fresh damage” to his Mercedes Benz, including two flat tires.
Woods, 41, was arrested on Memorial Day after police in Jupiter discovered the golfer just after 2 a.m. asleep in his car, which was stopped in the right lane of the road. He was hunched over the steering wheel with his seatbelt on and the engine running, arrest records show.
He told police he had not been drinking but was taking three prescription medications, including the opioid painkiller Vicodin. He later took three Breathalyzer tests that both registered 0.00, indicating he had no alcohol in his system.
In the dashcam video that police released, the athlete is not seen immediately but is heard telling officers off-camera that he did not know where he was. He had initially told an officer that he was returning from Los Angeles, where he had played golf.
The golfer told officers that he did not know where he was, after first saying he had driven from California, where he had been playing golf.
Woods swayed, rolled his eyes and closed them as police conducted field sobriety tests.
Slurring his speech as he tried to answer the officers’ questions, Woods had difficulty standing and kept weaving and bobbing. After removing his sneakers, he tried unsuccessfully to walk a straight line. His speech was “extremely slow and slurred,” according to the DUI probable cause affidavit. He failed four of five field sobriety tests, the affidavit said, and was charged with driving under the influence.
The police photos of Woods’ 2015 black S63 AMG Mercedes (which sold for a base retail price of about $235,000) show minor damage to the front bumper on the driver’s side, as well as scuffs and scratches on the rear bumper. The passenger-side rear taillight was not working, according to the documents. Police release the photos on Wednesday.
Both of the tires on the driver’s side were flat and those two rims had minor damage.
Woods has not golfed in months and is recovering from back surgery in April, his fourth back operation in three years. In a statement released hours after he was freed from custody on his own recognizance without bond at 10:50 a.m. Monday, he said he had not been drinking when police found him but had an “unexpected reaction” from “a mix of prescription drugs.” He also apologized to his family, friends and fans.
His arraignment is scheduled for July 5.
Woods lives on Jupiter Island, about nine miles from the scene of his arrest. He paid $54.5 million for his estate in 2011, which includes a golf course. Police noted on his arrest documents that his car was headed south, in the opposite direction from his home.
