Honoring Black History Month
Listen to this articleBlack History Month is an annual observance in the United States and is held in February. It dates back to at least 1926. It has also been called “African-American History Month.”
In 1976, the U.S. government officially adopted the title of “Black History Month.” At that time, the then-President the Hon. Gerald Ford urged his fellow Americans “to seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

The individuals in my poster — entertainers, artists, educators, religious and labor leaders, peace and justice activists, a football great and politicos alike — are representative of the many, who work tirelessly to make my hometown of Baltimore a better place for all.
This poster is my way of paying tribute to them and to the “Black History Month” celebration in the year 2017.
Bill Hughes is a native of Baltimore. He’s an attorney, author, professional actor and hobbyist photographer. In his salad days, he worked on the docks as a longshoreman. Bill also played on three championship soccer teams: sandlot with Jules Morstein; high school at Calvert Hall; and college at the University of Baltimore.
