Today is the State of the Union Address, aka Obama’s Self Evaluation. Am I alone or would we be better off with Simpsons reruns?
Early reports indicate the president will rely on increasing the capital gains … tax to pay for his next round of government run programs. Republicans will counter with an argument that claims less government will stimulate the economy, which will bring in more tax revenue to pay for programs. The president will tout the 5.6 percent unemployment rate while Republicans will point out the number of people who have quit looking for work or who are under employed.
Obama will brag about paving the way for the “undocumented” to gain a path toward citizenship while his opponents will explain that illegals are another example of our president’s failure to secure our border.
The president will tell us how our presence in the Middle East from the two wars he inherited are winding down while Republicans will remind us ISIS and al-Qaeda make our presence there that much more necessary.
There will be bragging about the increased numbers who have signed up for “affordable” health care from Obama while Republicans will remind us it does nothing to bring down the cost of actual health care or decrease the power of insurance companies.
The funny thing is, if things were exactly as they are except there was a Republican in the White House and Democrats controlling both houses of Congress, we would hear the president boast in the same manner as Obama will and Democrats counter the same way as Republicans.
Both parties look at politics as a game where the object is to mislead the voting public into thinking one party cares about America while the other one hates it. The fact is, politicians care about getting re-elected and not much else. They are seduced by the trappings of power and judge their successes more by how well they handle crisis’ as they pop up rather than by what they accomplish that allows us to avoid them all together.
The Who said it best when they sang, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” in their hit “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”
Mr. President, I refuse to be fooled again. Republicans, whoever you offer up to counter the president, I refuse to be fooled by what he/she has to say.
I will watch something more intellectually challenging and believable instead of listening to what either party has to say. I will wait for the day the rest of the nation wakes up and realizes our elected leaders are actually elected thieves who have succeeded in robbing us of an effective democracy built around cooperation and compromise because they chose to be bought off by lobbyists who have no interest in the American public. I will watch something that makes me forget I live in a nation built upon the empty promises and hollow words of politicians who would throw their families under the bus if it ensured getting reelected.
Yes, the more I think of it, the more I see myself watching Bart and Homer do their thing. Or maybe I will catch some great advise spewed from Al Bundy while he sits on a couch with his hands inside the waist of his pants. Anything, just not more of the same garbage we will be given by another failed president whose only interest at this time is improving his horrific approval ratings before he leaves office for good.
