Los Angeles is a city that is always on the move. Lots to do, people to see, there’s not a moment’s rest. It’s a city powered by coffee, and with that comes plenty of coffee shops.

Picking up a cup of Joe on the go is a part and parcel of everyone’s day, while even an evening or morning meet up in a coffee shop is part of routine. But with hundreds across the city, where are the best places to drink?

We of course all know about the likes of Go Get Em Tiger and Verve, but where are the hidden gems that may have passed you by?

We take a look at five of the most underrated coffee shops in LA…

Enigma Coffee

Located on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Enigma claims to be the best in the area and we can certainly vouch for their espresso.

Created by entrepreneurs Yoni Babitsky and Katia Hayes, the coffee shop has a great range of signature blends as well as a brilliant set of cake options, to sit out on the patio and watch the world go by.

As well as great coffee, the interior is comforting and perfect for a few hours work, while the restaurant patio furniture is also ideal for simply sitting for a few hours and watching the world go by. What’s more, Enigma Coffee is also attached to the Enigma Escape Rooms, so once you’ve enjoyed your Cappuccino you can really have some fun!

Of course, given the current climate that may not be possible, but as things get back to normal, Enigma is one great spot for coffee.

Cafe Roma

Cafe Roma’s socially distant offering is certainly to be commended and they’re offering both takeout and the ability to sit in safely at the moment, thanks to its large patio that can host plenty, and in comfort too.

Sofas and cushioned chairs line the patio, all spaced out while table service offers the optimum experience. It’s something Cafe Roma, located in Beverly Hills have been doing for over 40 years, and they’ve grown a loyal following among locals not only thanks to their brilliant coffee, but also excellent food and cocktails too.

You can swap your espresso for an espresso martini or latte for something a little more exotic come the evening, making it an underrated spot both day and night.

Cognoscenti Coffee Bar

If you’re looking for a way to stay mentally sharp, you could do worse than head to one of Cognoscenti’s three locations and pick up a bag of their coffee bags which are available to take home.

Located in Culver City, South Olive Street and San Julian Street, the roasters are developing a real reputation and have stayed open during the pandemic with additional precautions in place to keep people safe.

They have a huge selection of different beans from roasters across the USA and it’s certainly a place for the coffee aficionados.
