Twitter and other sites taken off line
If you were trying to get into your Twitter, Spotify, Shopify, SoundCloud or other popular social media outlet, but couldn’t it isn’t on your end.
Hacker News is reporting an outage caused by a DDOS attack, a hack that hits the system with botnets that request overwhelming amounts of information from the DNS provider, Dyn. The attack has taken those and many other sites offline. Other sites affected: Vox Media, New York Times, Boston Globe, Reddit, Github, Airbnb, Box, Freshbooks, and Heroku.
The outage affected primarily the Eastern portion of the U.S., but users throughout the continent have been affected.
According to Dyn, which is based in New Hampshire, services have been restored to normal operations as of 6:36 a.m. PT. We have checked Twitter, New York Times, Boston Globe and found some sites to be accessible, although Spotify has some problems, but the Boston Globe and Twitter both appear to be offline as of this writing.
We will keep monitoring and update as needed.

UPDATE: Some users are still experiencing problems with some sites. Wired has an excellent explanation of what happened and what is happening now with this hack.
The attacks are coming in waves so users might experience outages on several sites until the attacks end. The LAPX Twitter is fully functional, as is our Facebook page.
We are not the typical news website – nor do we wish to be. We will be offering more than news and blogs, but an opportunity for fiction writers, poets, comedians and musicians to showcase their talent and skills. Much like when the Beatles formed Apple Corps Ltd, they opened the door to all kinds of inspiring talent that never really got a shot. From that came the likes of James Taylor and others. We hope by providing a similar approach we can shine the light on some tremendous undiscovered talent and at the same time offer some familiar voices who live in Los Angeles and beyond.
