HalleBOOjah!

Listen to this article

Black cats, witches’ hats, flying bats
It’s that time of year
Run, hide, stay inside
Surrender to your fears!

Surrounded by my black cat and a plastic pumpkin full of sugary treats, my thoughts turn to Halloween, that classic Celtic/Christian mash-up coming soon to a haunted house near you. Taking the best of both traditions, we can rename it HalleBOOjah, and on a dark, stormy night it’s a wicked good tale.

Now, you may be thinking, do we really need to tell each other scary stories? After all, we could just watch the news. But listen close and you will remember the heart of this story: You are Light. Yes, you. Eternal, timeless, even birthless and deathless, you are a being of Light. Light in the cells of our being/body (our DNA entrains light waves) is Divine Intelligence itself, and this is now accepted scientific knowledge.

Doesn’t it seem natural then that in this season where the days get shorter and the nights get longer, we long to remember our luminous legacy? In times past, we fired up the lights, whether pumpkins, candles, or bonfires, to welcome and honor souls who’d moved on to different realms. We laughed, loved, and took ourselves lightly all the while knowing that the light always prevailed. We were the people who shared the stories, circled the dances, and chanted the songs, and those traditions kept us in good spirits. Many of us consider ourselves to be a light to our families, friends and the world because that wisdom is literally encoded in our ancestral memory.

But somewhere along the way we forgot who we were. We began the shadow making process and we began to believe more in the fear than in the light. And FEAR says: Forget Everything And Run. The world is ever eager to conspire with you in this new game of forgetting. Many of your fellow citizens on planet earth, everyone from insurance salesman to military generals to medical doctors, immerse you in fearful feelings and remind you of your impending losses. Yikes – run for your lives!

Living on a steady diet of artificial food and reality TV, we’ve gotten confused. Light, what light? Only the darkness is real, only the suffering, only the sadness.

Cruelty and darkness have become idols to be worshipped at the altars of our curiosity. And we allow fear, that thief in the night, to steal our joy, our love, and our peace of mind. And that, my friends, is a very scary story indeed.

So on this night of haunting memories I invite you to move the energy from scared to sacred. You don’t have to stop watching the news, just increase your spiritual practices. You can start by seeing the headlines as your prayer requests. If you find yourself lost in the darkness, silently retreat into the inner sanctuary of your brilliant soul, knowing that throughout the long night, life is. And any time a fear thought arises, banish it with a hale and hearty Halleboojah!
