Since its founding in 2012, Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water has been dedicated to creating a wholly carbon neutral product and distribution model, and has succeeded in becoming one of the first beverage producers to be awarded a CarbonNeutral® certification.

In 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson spearheaded the concept of a national day dedicated to raising awareness of the critical importance of environmental sustainability and protection. The date selected – April 22nd, 1970 – saw 20 million peaceable, bipartisan demonstrators across the U.S. rally to promote greater oversight into industrial practices that polluted waterways, cut down forests, emitted toxic fumes, endangered animals, and dispersed harmful pesticides throughout communities. The demonstration ultimately resulted in the passage of the Clean Air Act, led to the formation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and cemented Earth Day as the world’s largest single-day secular observance.

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water stands with the millions of individuals and organizations across the globe that dedicate their energy, resources, and revenue towards building a healthier, greener planet. Waiakea Water strives to promote and embody the native Hawaiian concept of ‘Ohana – the belief that family extends throughout and beyond one’s own community in an interconnected and far-reaching way. We are all intertwined, so it is our collective responsibility to ensure all of our habitats are clean, functional, and strong.

Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water has committed to reducing its carbon footprint through sustainable and responsible manufacturing, shipping, recycling, and operational practices. These include using exclusively recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) materials for bottling, which require 85 percent less energy to manufacture than other common packaging materials. Waiakea also transports its product via smart shipping solutions, which reduces overall mileage traveled to market by 15 percent, lowering CO2 emissions by 45 percent. Waiakea is also proud to participate in external carbon offset programs that help to further reduce its carbon footprint by capturing greenhouse gas emissions, restoring forestlands, and producing greener and more efficient shipping solutions.

Thorough its internal efforts and partnerships with diverse environmental organizations, Waiakea Water is becoming a leading voice on how positive change creates a better world
