Male Menopause: Not a myth

Listen to this article

Some men like to use menopause as a way to tease women and I originally thought to write this funny, as a way to “get back” at men. But somewhere along the road of research, it got kind of interesting.

Men 45 years and up, are you experiencing fatigue, depression, sexual problems and even in some cases, hot flashes and severe sweating? Those could be signs of Male Menopause.

Menopause means pausing menstruation. If this doesn’t sound right for men, other terms are Andropause, Hypogonadism or ADAM (Androgen deficiency of the aging male).

Doctors don’t actually use the term Menopause and men’s reproductive systems do not completely shut down as in women’s menopause. Although men can and do experience bouts of impotency with Andropause.

Just because you are having one or more of those symptoms doesn’t mean you are going through menopause. Those symptoms can also be from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and so on which would be treated first. Your doctor will ask you questions regarding your symptoms and overall health before running tests. It could be a testosterone deficiency or you might need to make dietary changes, start an exercise program or take anti-depressants.

The World Health Organization doesn’t even recognize Andropause. Could these be strictly men in denial? There is an on-going professional disagreement about whether it is considered a “Normal State” to be diagnosed or “Disorder” that needs to be treated.

I’m not trying to fix you, so don’t go off what I say. If you are experiencing these symptoms, go to the doctor. Wouldn’t want you getting emotional or anything — oops.

I wonder what percentage of marital breakups are actually caused by the devastating, DMD or Double Menopause Disorder if both husband and wife experienced menopause at the same time.

Sorry guys I just couldn’t help teasing you a little bit. Hey you comedians out there, can you use this in your act? Call me.
